Did you know that when celebrating the Lunar New Year in the Chinese tradition, serving a whole chicken represents happiness and prosperity in the New Year? This Chinese Roast Chicken recipe is perfect to celebrate the Lunar New Year or to enjoy anytime you’re looking for a flavorful and easy to make chicken dish. A quick marinade in soy sauce, honey, and traditional Chinese spices, followed by uncovered oven roasting makes a chicken that has delicious crispy skin and plenty of flavor. After roasting, cut the bird into pieces and serve with stir fried vegetables and rice. It’s a delicious meal!

Ingredients

  • 5 lb(s) Whole Chicken
  • .25 cup(s) Soy Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Honey
  • 1 tsp Five Spice Powder
  • 1 clove(s) Garlic (minced)

Directions

  1. Help your chicken roast more evenly by trussing it. First, tuck the wings in to the body and then tie tight to the body of the bird. Then pull the legs together and tie them together. After trussing the bird, place the bird in a large sealable bag.

  2. Mix together the soy sauce, honey, five spice and garlic to make the marinade. Pour into the sealable bag with the chicken and rub all over the chicken. Remove the chicken from the marinade and discard the marinade. Place the chicken breast side up on a rack over a roasting pan. Let the chicken sit for about 30 minutes at room temperature to dry the skin. This will help the skin crisp when it cooks.

  3. Roast the chicken for 45 minutes – 60 minutes at 400ºF, until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165ºF in the thighs.
