Frikadellen (German Meat Patties) - Lake Geneva Country Meats

Frikadellen (German Meat Patties)

German words are so much fun, and Frikadellen is a super fun one!

This recipe is sometimes called a "German Hamburger," but it's really more of the Venn diagram overlap of a hamburger, a meatball, and a meatloaf.

Frikadellen (singularly a frikadelle) have the seared, browned crust of a burger, the tender, seasoned bite of a meatball, and the savory, bread-softened interior of a good meatloaf, all in a patty you can make in about 30 minutes.

In Germany, Frikadellen are everyday street food. You'll find them at snack stands, butcher counters, bakeries, train stations, and family picnics.

You can eat them on a crusty German roll with mustard, use a fork & knife and serve them with potatoes (roast or mashed), eat them by hand with a pickle, or even enjoy them cold!

Here at LGCM, we make ours with our 60/40 blend of ground beef and pork. This mix of ground beef and pork sticks together better than just ground beef, and has more flavor than plain ground pork. It's perfect for this recipe and any other meatball / meatloaf type of recipe.

Let us know what you think of this recipe by leaving us a comment and rating. We'd especially love to hear if you have a favorite mustard to serve with these patties!

Frikadellen (German Meat Patties)

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground Beef & Pork Blend (60/40)
  • 2 slices of bread, torn and soaked in milk for 10 minutes
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 bunch parsley, chopped
  • 1 tbsp. German / brown / Dijon mustard
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 1 tsp. marjoram
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil

Directions

  1. Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl and knead until combined.

  2. Shape your meat into 6 - 8 patties - thicker than a hamburger but flatter than a meatball - and set aside.

  3. Add oil to a large pan and heat to medium high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the frikadellen.

  4. Fry for approximately 7 minutes until one side is thoroughly browned, then flip and cook for another approximate 7 minutes, until the meat reaches 160ºF.

  5. Once cooked, remove from the frying pan, transfer to a plate lined with paper towel and allow to rest for 3 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
