carlos serres tempranillo review

Carlos Serres is a family owned and operated producer of wine in Haro, Rioja, who have been making wine since 1896. This wine comes from old vines (50+ year old), and is technically a Rioja. However, the wine is a younger, fresher style of Rioja, made from 100% Tempranillo, and is labeled as “Tempranillo Old Vines,” so we will be referring to it as the Carlos Serres Tempranillo!

There are lots of red cherry and raspberry fruit flavors coming out of the glass with this wine. The wine is light bodied, and juicy with red fruit flavors. Additionally, there are notes of spice and vanilla on the finish that come from the short oak aging that the wine receives. This is a low alcohol wine – just 13% – with a nice amount of acidity to balance the wine.

Carlos Serres makes a lot of great values, and this wine is no different. It’s normally priced about $10-12, and represents a really nice value for a young Rioja wine. If you like this wine, try a Rioja Crianza or Reserva for a wine with more age on it, and a bit more character. Try a bottle for yourself, and see what you think!
